An Excellent Spirit is a huge believer in the West Wing character Toby Ziegler played by Richard Schiff. We especially agree with Toby’s admonition never to “tempt fate” by predicting victory before the polls close and the votes have been cast.
Nevertheless, recent events, primarily the atrocious Obama debate performance and the tragic Libyan murders, tempt “us” to incur Toby’s wrath by “tempting fate”. This story in PJ Media’s PJ Tatler is why we are tempted. “On Thursday RealClearPolitics moved a handful of states from “Lean Obama” to “toss-up.” Those states are Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. Collectively they represent 43 electoral votes. RCP aggregates and averages polls, so its moves tend to lag what may be happening on the ground. Its average also still includes some pre-presidential debate polls that have yet to cycle out. Based on their electoral history, though, we should expect that Virginia will go to the GOP and Pennsylvania will go to the Democrats. I’m not saying definitely that they will go that way, but it’s the safer way to bet at this point.” Rasmussen now has Romney leading in Florida “Mitt Romney has crossed the 50% mark for the first time to widen his lead to four points in Florida. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Florida Voters finds Romney with 51% support to President Obama’s 47%. Two percent (2%) remain undecided.” Now, look at the Real Clear Politics updated Electoral College map.
Now watch the video of the West Wing episode about “tempting the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing.” An Excellent Spirit agrees with Yogi that “it aint over till its over”. We have done what Toby says is needed to appease “the whatever’s wrath”: we went outside, turned around three times and spit.” But, not to “tempt fate”, An Excellent Spirit remembers just a few short weeks ago.
It is beginning to look at lot like November from here. Stay tuned. An Excellent Spirit will bring it all to you. Superstition, the “wrath of the whatever” and everything in between. Right up to November 6th. God bless America!
