Faith Without Votes is Dead
If you were to ask almost any Christian in the United States of America what this country lacked you would most likely get an answer including one of the following words: reformation, awakening, or spiritual transformation. These words can apply to many areas including reformation in the church, revitalization of our schools, or the spiritual transformation of the culture.
Pre-eminent among the areas in which most Christians are looking for “change” is our politics. The common view is that the policies the government makes and the law-makers who pass those policies are corrupt, failing, and leading this nation into an uncertain fate. Unlike the other areas for which we intercede, government is the only one that can be changed by a democratic process. In fact, politics and government dictate major portions of every area, including culture.
According to David Barton, of Wallbuilders, only 44% of the 83 million Christians in the United States vote. 66% of those Americans who claim to be Christians do not vote on a regular bases. These are the same Christians who preach about turning our nation back to God. They are the same ones who gripe and complain or, to use a more biblical term, murmur, about taxes, education and a country that is wandering away from its founding principles.
It amazes me the length to which the church will go to strategize their marches, vigils, and prayer meetings while not participating on election day. Despite the Word of God for the Church to be “light and salt”, the simple task of voting is somehow not a part of our plan to reclaim our nation. Do we think that the laws are just going change because we think they should? Are we so naive as to believe that our politicians, who have been doing to same things for years and years, will suddenly change their ways? Perhaps, by some act of providence, the ink on our ineffective and often detrimental programs and statutes will miraculously result in a healthy, functioning governmental system.
While these questions are sarcastic and perhaps ridiculous, do not these attitudes and actions of Christians lead only to these precise results? Our Lord is more than capable of remedying all these ungodly consequences, by Himself. But that is not how our God works. He never does anything without revealing Himself to His people through His Word. He has chosen to establish His Kingdom on earth and in this nation through the actions of men.
Proverbs 29:2 says “When the righteous rule the people rejoice, but when a wicked man rules, the people groan”. The people are most certainly groaning today in America. Why when we have been blessed by God to be in a place where we can vote and elect the righteous?
Truth be told, the blame for the state of our nation and the policies of our government rests on our shoulders. And while those whom we send to represent us may have made bad decisions and are to blame for much of our troubles, the United States remains a government of, for and by the People. Those who govern do so by our consent. They derive their power from us. It is only by our continued neglect and ignorance that they continue to operate as they do.
